Atlantis – oil paintings

Legends about vanished cultures have fascinated us for thousands of years; an archaic civilization, a mythical city lost to the waves. The series of  ‘Atlantis’ paintings by visual artist Maryleen Schiltkamp bear witness to a cultural view; a timeless flood, sunken temples, and amphitheaters in a mysterious silence on the ocean floor… The underwater images speak of a culture that once existed and was shared by people but is now lost.

 ‘Atlantis – Sphinx’, 120 x 100 cm, oil on canvas, 2025

A source of inspiration for the “Atlantis” paintings was Schiltkamp’s fascination with underwater archaeology, particularly a recent report on excavations at the sunken city of Thonis-Heracleion off the coast of Alexandria. In 2021, the artist visited Kadir van Lohuizen’s photo exhibition ‘Rising Tidein Amsterdam – an urgent call for humanity to acknowledge the threat of global sea level rising. In our current era of climate change, legends and tales of sunken cities are revived.

A number of artworks were painted in 2020/’21 and a new Atlantis paintings are added in 2025

Atlantis & Other Utopias

Schiltkamp’s ‘ Atlantis’ paintings formed the basis for the interdisciplinary project ‘Atlantis & Other Utopias’, a concert featuring music composed specifically for the paintings by composer/pianist Marion von Tilzer, combined with a live video performance by Anne Gentenaar and Martin Boverhof: Studio de Maan, which unites music and visuals as an artistic entity. A video recording of this concert will be shown on a monitor in the White Box gallery during the ATLANTIS exhibition.
